Something Special: Halloween Trick or Treat

Here are a few pictures of how I spent my Halloween day and evening.  I love making Halloween all about my kids, getting to go to their school to help with their classroom parties and costume parade is such a special thing to me. I also love our group of neighborhood friends that we go trick or treating with each year.  The kids always have such a blast with all of their friends and I am sure  they are making memories that will last their lifetime.

Thankful It's the Weekend

This week I had my wisdom-teeth pulled.  Which means, that for half of the week I just laid on the couch, took pain medicine, and felt sorry for myself.  Regardless of that black spot in my week, there was still a lot that happened to be thankful for!


1. Last Sunday I got to join some girls in suprising my very special friend, Jennifer, with at 40th birthday party.  This lady is pretty incredible, and yep, doesn't look 40, and she can run races (even half marathons) around most 20-somethings.

2. My family and I made our annual trip to the pumpkin patch.  It's always one of my favorite days of the year.  My husband took off work and we took advantage of the kids' day off school and hit the local pumpkin farm on a crowd-free day!

3. I had the best tasting hamburger I have ever had at The Burger Stand at the Casbah in Lawrence, KS.. It had apple chutney on it.. sooo good. This place has been featured in several national magazines and does not disappoint.  Gourmet delicious food hidden in a bar. 

4. Despite the sucky-ness of having my wisdom teeth pulled.  I am still proud of myself that I went through with it.  I have a BIG, colossal fear of the dentist.. and this was pretty monumental of me in overcoming that fear. Plus I got to be taken care of by my mommy for the day afterwards.

5. Even though, I wasn't quite feeling up to par after my dental work, I still managed to make it to a Halloween get-together with friends.  My husband and I dressed up as Mary Poppins and Bert the Chimney Sweep.. these costumes were super easy to put together and really fun to wear.

6. My facebook fan page reached over 1000 followers this week! That is pretty darn exciting! In celebration I am doing a giveaway.. don't forget to enter the raffle HERE.

Something Special

My grandma used to have a grand collection of these Halloween cut-outs that she had collected through the 60s 70s and 80s very similar to these.  When I was little I loved helping her tape them up to her huge picture window every October. I remember I was always a little scared of the witch though.

5 Things that Made this Week Fabulous

1.  I got to attend a fab shopping/charity event hosted by my lovely friend Kem from Chronicles of a Sweet Tooth, and Crystal from Wayward Dogs that raised funds for Midwest Adopt a Bull.

2. On Tuesday my son had his pre-school Halloween party.  I was the room-mom in charge so I got to lead the festivities.  We played pass the pumpkin (Halloween hot potato,)  decorated jack-o-lantern cookies, and had a costume parade!  Helping out at the school is my favorite part of being a stay-at-home mommy.

 

 

3.  Halloween was Wednesday!  I had room-mom duty at my daughter's school in the morning, and of course at night we went trick-or-treating.  We go with a huge group of friends in our neighborhood, its so fun!

 

 

4.  On Thursday, I had more work done on my tattoo, it is coming along and its exciting to see some color on it!

 

 

5.  Saturday, my family attended the birthday celebration of a dear friend's father.   We got to get all dressed up and have a great time together. There was a lovely service of praise and thanksgiving followed by a delicious dinner and champagne toasts with old friends.  Later, there was dancing and my kids tore up the dance floor, we all had a great time.

 

 

 

Wardrobe Wednesday: Halloween Spirit

Today is Halloween!!!  I love Halloween! Pretty soon, I will be heading over to my daughter's school to help out with room-mom "Harvest" party duties. This evening of course, Iwill be hittin' up the neighborhood with my kiddos and friends for some free candy!

I have already been to my costume party events, so I will not be in costume today...today is for my kids.  However, I am dressing with the Halloween spirit in mind.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I found the pumpkin orange dress at Marshall's on clearance for only $10, and since nothing says Halloween like orange and black, today is the perfect day to wear it!  This outfit could easily become a costume simply by adding a witch hat, or maybe by cutting out  a jack-o-lantern face from black felt  and pinning it to the bust or skirt of the dress.

I hope you have a spooktacularly fun Halloween!  Embrace the fun of the holiday and eat lots of chocolate.. its a known fact that calories consumed by candy eating never count on October 31st!

5 Things that made (Last) Week Fabulous

Last week, was really fun.  I  did a lot of work  on creating my Halloween costume;  helped my husband come up with his costume;  worked a few days at Retro Vixen, and got to have dinner with a friend I've known since 6th grade. The most fabulous part of the week , no doubt, was the adults only Halloween party hosted by my good friend, Melissa, that my husband and I went to Saturday night.  So this week, I am keeping this post simple and posting my 5 favorite pictures from the partay!

Super Easy Sugar Cookies

I love making my kids special cookies for special holidays.  I always use the simple cake-mix sugar cookie recipe to mix up some quick dough.   Just take one box of  white cake mix, one egg, and a fourth of cup of melted butter or margarine, and mix together until it becomes dough,  if it isn't moist enough to stick together properly you can add a TBS or two of water.   The key to making the cookies extra chewy and tasty instead of dense and hard is to roll them out using powdered sugar instead of flour.    Cut out the cookies and bake for about 10 minutes at 350degrees.    I frosted my cookies with canned frosting for extra easiness and then added chocolate chips and candy corn for embellishments.   They are so cute, so easy, and make the kiddos so happy!
